Martha M. Bullen has loved books ever since she first learned to read, so she feels fortunate to have been able to build a career around her passion for reading and writing. Martha has worked in the publishing industry for over 25 years in a wide variety of roles, and enjoys mentoring and working with up-and-coming authors and publishers.

After earning a B.A. degree in English and graduating with honors from Carleton College, she began her career as a copywriter and marketing assistant at Scott, Foresman and Company (best known for their Dick and Jane books), where she wrote back cover copy and press releases for over 100 professional and trade books.

Martha went on to work as marketing manager at Chicago trade publisher Bonus Books (best known for publishing Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka’s bestselling autobiography).

She formed her own company, Bullen Publishing Services, in 1989, and has been happily self-employed since then as a book coach, copywriter, editor and book marketing, publicity and publishing expert.

She is also a publicity consultant for The National Publicity Summit, managing editor of The Bestseller Blueprint program with Jack Canfield, and former managing editor of Book Marketing Update. 

Martha coauthored three nonfiction books with Darcie Sanders, including Staying Home: From Full-time   Professional to Full-time Parent and Turn Your Talents into Profits.

Martha has appeared on “The Today Show,” “The Early Show,” “Roseanne,” CNN, PBS, NPR and numerous other TV and radio shows. Her books have been featured in Time, The New York Times, USA Weekend, Working Woman, Ms., Parents and many other publications. She and her coauthor previously taught seminars on book publicity for the University of Chicago’s Publishing Program.
